Dry Needling

Dry needling is a highly effective treatment utilized for treating a majority of pains and aches inevitably accrued by the active population (see the list of injuries that dry needling can treat in the section, " Is it For Me ?").

The research has consistently demonstrated that dry needling can facilitate decreased D.O.M.S. and recovery time, allowing individuals to perform at a higher level more consistently with a decreased risk of injury.  These benefits occur secondary to the muscles, tendons, ligaments, nervous system, etc. being closer to 100% healed and recovered versus a body that is constantly being challenged and beat up without having the proper recovery time.  Over extended periods where the body is not allowed to fully recover, systemic inflammation ensues that greatly increases the risk of injury.

Dry needling is an extraordinary treatment tool that athletes and any active individual should seriously consider as a maintenance and/or injury prevention prophylactic measure.

Blood Flow Restriction Training

Everyone -- from professional athletes, wounded warriors, active adults to the elderly -- can benefit from Blood Flow Restriction training.
Blood flow restriction (BFR) training is one of the newest and most effective ways to supplement your workout and/or rehabilitation regimen and it boasts many benefits.  While utilizing BFR, you lift a fraction of your weight or exercise at a significantly reduced intensity, but you still accrue the same strength benefits -- all the while without any muscle breakdown!  This means you can employ BFR on your "off" days and still attain the same strength gains and muscle hypertrophy as if you had completed your workout routine with your usual weights/intensity.

For those individuals who are rehabilitating from an injury or surgery, BFR offers a phenomenal option to further augment your strengthing routine -- and it will likely expedite the rehabilitation process!  When you are in an injured or post-surgical state, it is impossible to lift the same weight and exercise at the same intensity as when you are 100%.  However, BFR allows you to accomplish equivalent strength gains and muscle hypertrophy as if you were lifting weight or exercising at an intensity similar to when you are healthy... while only lifting a fraction of the weight and/or exercising at a fraction of the intensity you are accustomed.

Myofascial Decompression (Cupping)

cupping, missoula physical therapy, missoula therapy, missoula health, blood flow restriction, bfr, missoula pt, dry needling
Myofascial Decompression (more commonly known as "Cupping") is a unique treatment that uses suction to lift tissue as the cup is moved by the therapist to decompress underlying tissue.

There are two basic types of cupping procedures: wet and dry cupping. ProActive Health utilizes dry cupping, which involves no direct drawing out of any blood, but still involves the creation of a vacuum inside a cup and distraction of the soft tissues, resulting in increased circulation to the skin.

The suction created by the cup produces a tensile stress on the skin and underlying tissue, along with compressive forces underneath the rim of the cup.  These tensile stresses are thought to cause dilation and rupture of the superficial capillaries, creating the reddish-colored circles.  This may reduce discomfort in the target tissues by stimulating inhibitory neural pathways. Thus, cupping may create a "counter irritation" effect that temporarily increases pressure pain thresholds (i.e. decrease pain).  Additionally, altered local metabolic activity may contribute to this effect.

How Myofascial Cupping Works
It creates a negative (tension) pressure which may:
  • Passively stretches tissue resulting in increased ROM
  • Increase blood supply/heat to area treated
  • Increase fluid movement which assists in recovery (i.e. decreased edema)
  • Increase nutrient-rich blood supply to injured area

Kinesiology taping (KT) is designed to facilitate the body’s natural healing process while allowing support and stability to muscles and joints without restricting range of motion. KT is utilized to successfully treat a variety of orthopedic, neuromuscular, neurological and other medical conditions.  KT may alleviate pain and inflammation by facilitating lymphatic drainage and circulation by microscopically lifting the skin.  Also, KT provides extended soft tissue manipulation that promotes prolonged benefits of manual therapy administered within a therapy session.

Benefits of Kinesiology Taping
Kinesiology taping allows for improved rehabilitation and helps limit pain in three distinct ways:

Structurally

Neurologically

Microcirculatory
  • Alleviates strain on affected muscles
  • Prevents painful or harmful muscle extension
  • Dynamically improves postural positions
  • Restores normal muscle activation and functional stability
  • Promotes nervous system changes necessary for healing
  • Enhances sensory stimulation for pain control
  • Improves flow of blood and oxygen to promote healing and performance
  • Addresses swelling and edema
